Speech Language Specialist, Slocum Skewes

Hello! My name is Ms. Pate, and I am a Speech Language Specialist here at

Slocum Skewes School. I’ve been working in schools for 7 years, with the last 5 at Slocum. I work with grades 3-8 with students who receive speech-language services.

For my undergraduate degree, I majored in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences with a minor in Psychology and a minor in Disability Studies from Hofstra University. For my graduate degree, I majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Montclair State University. I hold a national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as well as my New Jersey Department of Education Speech Language Specialist Standard Certification. In the 2023-2024 school year, I was honored with Slocum's Governor’s Educational Services Professional of the Year.

In my role as a speech-language specialist, I teach students how to communicate beyond just their needs and wants, and to express their opinions, thoughts, and ideas. A passion of mine is teaching self-advocacy and independence to my students. I believe it is essential to prioritize functional learning and building life-long skills, strategies, and systems for my students. 

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, yoga, and reading a good book!
